Plovdiv is older than Rome. Older than most cities you have ever visited.
Settled continuously since 6000 BC, it layers Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian history in a way that makes even seasoned travellers stop and recalibrate. This full day takes you there – through the cobbled streets of the old town and the Roman theatre still standing after two thousand years – and then south into the Rhodope Mountains to Bachkovo Monastery, one of the most beautiful and ancient Orthodox complexes in the Balkans.
Two extraordinary places. One remarkable day. Small group, licensed guide, no rushing.
WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE
MAIN DESCRIPTION
Bulgaria’s second city does not announce itself loudly. It does not need to.
Walk into the old town of Plovdiv and the centuries simply accumulate around you. The cobbled streets of the Revival Period quarter are lined with merchants’ houses from the 18th and 19th centuries – their upper floors jutting out dramatically over the street, their interiors hiding painted ceilings and carved woodwork that took craftsmen years to complete. The Roman Theatre appears suddenly from a viewpoint above the city, its marble seats still arranged in perfect semicircles, the stage backed by the rooftops of the modern city below. Underneath the main pedestrian street, the ruins of the Roman Stadium stretch for hundreds of metres beneath the shops and cafes above.
Plovdiv is not a city that keeps its history in glass cases. It lives inside it.
Your licensed guide walks you through the old town for approximately one hour, bringing the layers of history to life – the Thracian settlement on the hill, the Greek and Roman city of Philippopolis, the Ottoman mosques and bazaars, and the extraordinary flowering of Bulgarian culture during the Revival Period in the 18th and 19th centuries. After the guided walk, there is free time to explore at your own pace – to find a coffee on the pedestrian street, browse the galleries of the Kapana Creative Quarter, or simply sit on a terrace and let the old town settle around you.
Bachkovo Monastery
The drive from Plovdiv south into the Rhodope Mountains takes just 30 minutes, but the landscape shifts completely. The Rhodopes are older and quieter than the other Bulgarian ranges – ancient forests, deep river valleys, and a quality of light that feels different from the plains. This is the mountain of Orpheus in Greek mythology, and it is not difficult to understand why people once believed a god lived here.
Bachkovo Monastery was founded in 1083 by the Byzantine military commander Gregory Bakuriani and his brother. Nearly a thousand years later it is still an active monastery, still drawing pilgrims, and still one of the most impressive religious sites in Bulgaria. The main church holds an 11th-century icon of the Virgin Mary that is considered miracle-working by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The walls of the complex are covered in frescoes of remarkable quality – some dating to the 17th century, others to earlier periods. The setting, enclosed by forested slopes and the sound of the Bachkovska River nearby, adds a stillness to the visit that is genuinely hard to find elsewhere.
Your guide leads a 30-minute guided tour of the monastery complex, after which there is free time to walk around the small market outside, light a candle inside, or simply sit in the courtyard and absorb the atmosphere.
This is one of those days that reminds you how much history a small country can hold.
